What’s included in our driver education program?
Maine driver education for students under 18 includes a parent and student orientation, two in-person classroom sessions, online coursework through AAA 25-30 hours, 50 questions multiple choice final exam, and 10 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction. At Tuttle's Driving School, the program runs about one per month.
Additionally we will periodically offer a full in person course in which all classes will be taught by our licensed instructors at 1338 Broadway South Portland, omitting the online AAA program.
How long does driver education take to complete?
Driver education at Tuttle's Driving School runs about one month from start to finish. Students attend an orientation, two in person 3 hour classes, complete about 25-30 hours of online coursework through AAA, an in person 1.5 hour final exam as well as complete 10 hours of in-car lessons.
We do emphasize properly pacing yourself with your coursework each week. You cannot take the multiple choice final exam until the online AAA portion is completed.
Please note if you miss any of these classes you will be moved into another class, all in person sessions are MANDATORY.
The in car driving lessons are scheduled by the students based on weekly availability, you will not receive your permit until the 10 hours are completed. It is your responsibility to schedule these lessons.
Can adults take private driving lessons if they've never driven?
Yes, private driving lessons are designed for first-time drivers of all ages, including adults as long as they have a valid permit in the state of Maine. At Tuttle's Driving School, instructors tailor lessons to each student's experience level and provide calm, patient coaching for nervous learners. Lessons focus on real-world driving & common scenarios found in the greater Portland area.
What does road test preparation cover?
Road test preparation simulates real test conditions and covers common maneuvers, local routes, and examiner expectations. At Tuttle's Driving School, lessons take place on familiar South Portland roads to reduce anxiety and improve performance. Instruction is especially supportive for nervous test-takers or those who've struggled before.Can I use the driving school's car for my road test?
Yes, vehicle use is available for the road test when you schedule road test preparation through Tuttle's Driving School. This helps students feel more comfortable on test day by using a familiar, well-maintained vehicle. It's especially helpful for those without regular access to a car.How many students are in each driver education class?
Classes at Tuttle's Driving School average about 20-25 students. While we can host up to 30 students we keep them smaller to maintain quality instruction and individual attention. This smaller class size allows instructors to address questions thoroughly and ensure every student understands key safety concepts before moving forward.
